San Diego, self-described as “America's Finest City” is not known for its visitor bargains. But the Washington Post has some suggestions for an inexpensive trip (under $1,000) that are applicable to other areas:
 

• First, try to get a cheap air fare, under $220. Tips for doing that include staying away at Easter, take connecting flights, and avoid flying on Fridays or Sundays when fares are more expensive. Finally, sign up for fare notifications as early as possible at sites such as Kayak.com and Airfarewatchdog.com.
 

• Since rental cars are a must in a city with very limited mass transit, rental cars can be had in San Diego for less than $100 for three days if visitors shop around.
 

• Book one of the many cheap hotel chains starting at $50 a night, particularly in outlying cities such as El Cajon and Chula Vista. Some of the least expensive hotels are close to the beaches and downtown San Diego.
 

• Consider renting a condo directly from an owner. While typically a bit more expensive than a hotel room, condos come with full kitchens where you could cook meals, so the total cost could wind up cheaper, says the Post.
 

• Free activities in the city include jogging along the waterfront or renting a bicycle for just $10 a day or so.
 

• It costs $10 to park but there are free tours at the Torrey Pines State National Reserve and weekends include free admission.
 

• Visitors can also opt for a free tour of the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.
