Travel to Croatia

08/05/2011

Not much is known about the state of Croatia. People link the small crescent-shaped country mainly with the Adriatic Sea and the summer resorts there. In addition to this Croatia is more than thousand years old - raised in the foundations of ancient Illyria. It is one of those countries in Eastern Europe that have undergone many historical upheavals and changes still visible today.

Croatia is placed in the western corner of the Balkan peninsula, bordered by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro. Serbia, Hungary and Slovenia. To the west there is the Adriatic Sea and Italy. The geography of the country determined its historical development through the ages. Croatia became an independent kingdom in the 10th century and since then it was target to many conquests and political cataclysms.

It is easy to understand why – Croatia has strategic position on the map and beautiful nature. That’s why over the years for it fought illyrians, thraces, greeks, romans, celts, slavs, etc. Still you can see some of their marks embedded in the culture of modern Croatia. Visit the medieval town of Zadar, the walls of Dubrovnik, the cathedral of St. Duje and the Palace of Diocletian in Split or the ancient Roman arena in Pula. Croatia is one of those countries where history really is on every step.

And if you get tired of rambling around and watching historical sights here is the other unique thing Croatia can offer – it’s beautiful and manifold nature. The country is ecological paradise with lots of breathtaking landscapes and preserved territories. Not to mention one of the best beaches in Europe. Lots of tourists choose Croatia because of this combination and enjoy sunbaths below the proud fortifications of Dubrovnik or take a guided boat trip along the isles of the Adriatic Sea.

Zagreb – the capital of Croatia is the main entrance to the country and preferred starting point for the tourists. It is easy to get to Croatia – by car, by ship or by plane. If you choose to fly to the country, you must know that the Croatian national carrier – Croatia Airlines offers flights directly to Zagreb from almost every European capital. During the last years more and more airlines started to offer direct flights to Zadar, Dubrovnik, Split and Pula. There were no direct flights to Croatia from the USA since the summer of 2010 when the direct flight New York – Zagreb was launched by Croatia Airlines. Still you may choose to fly from USA to some european city and then fly to Croatia.
