Tasmania. Australia's Island State

11/05/2016

Tasmania is located 150 miles off the coast of Australia and is part of Australia but is its own island state. Its jagged edges and rough demeanor make it look almost other-worldly but once explored, Tasmania is a beautiful and raw place that delights every sense.

Freycinet National Park is home to Wineglass Bay and its infamous clear waters. Perfect for scuba diving or swimming, these crystal clear waters allow you to see everything around you. On land, there are plentiful walking trails that wind through the park and allow you to explore even the most remote parts of this habitat.

If you are lucky you might see the famous 'Tasmanian Devil'. The largest carnivorous marsupial in the world, it is found only in Tasmania, It resembles a small, stocky, black dog.The 'Devil' has been adopted as the image of Tasmania by many local organisations.

One of the more popular destinations is Hastings Cave. With tours everyday and a thermal pool right outside, Hastings Cave is an exploration all its own. Although it has been carved out to better benefit tourists, it's still a wonderment in its rawness.

Mount Wellington is one of the island's attention grabbers standing at 1270 meters, tourists can either climb to the top or take a cable car to witness a spectacular panoramic view. Be wary of peak times, like sunset, as it can get to be very crowded. Try going in the early morning or mid-day for the most space.

If you're more curious about the culture than the sights, visit Salamanca Market. Usually in full swing on Saturdays, it offers an up and coming music scene as well as multiple vendors. Take your time and wander through the stands to find some really interesting items.
