Roznoveanu Palace

Located in the centre of the city of Iasi, the palace was designed by the architect Gustav Freywald buitl by Iordache Roznovanu and finished in 1832. After the fire from 1834, was renovated by Roznoveanu`s son. The palace was erected according to Gustav freynwald plans. The new construction initially built in Venetian neo classical style had its frontispiece adorned with marble statuets representing mythological characters. In 1891 when the jounimist (Junimea was a society of literature from modern Romania) Vasile Pogor became the mayor of the city the building was boughtwith the purpose of serving as headquarters of the city hall.

Until 1891 when it sold the state capital building is the Rosetti family - Roznovanu the most powerful and influential family of Moldavian political arena of the city. As one of the most important houses in the age of Iasi, has hosted many international and witnessed some significant historical events.

At the end of century XVIII (1788), is established at the Palace, the Romanovs and the Russian general later, the entire Russian diplomacy, located here in the Organic Regulation (1829-1831).Moreover, in 1866, Roznovanu family, supported by political forces in Russia, try organizing a plot to follow boarding a seat Moldova's Nunuta Roznovanu, but the plan leads to failure.

Attempt was a failure and was Prince Michael Sturdza, established here in 1858 to return to power 10 years after leaving the country. Between 1892-1892, Roznovanu Palace will serve as temporary residence of the royal family, a part of space being allocated to local authorities.The building played an important role on the stage of history, especially World War between 1916-1918, when he hosted the political leadership refugee ministries headquarters in Bucharest.

After 1892, the building was the official residence of the Romanian royal family, a part of the space being allotted to the local authorities. The nowadays the cabinet of the mayor in on the exact spot where it was the bureau of king Ferdinandand in the actual Meeting Hall of the Local Council , Romania War Council get together in 1918.

Roznovanu Palace is the former residence of the Rosetti-Roznovanu family, built at the initiative of Iordache Neculai Roznovanu. It was inaugurated on 23rd April 1832 and at that time it was considered the most beautiful building in Iasi. The master of the palace had 3 wives, and the last of them, Maria, was the one that opened the gates of the palace for musicians and literates.

Here George Enescu and Haricleea Darcle had concerts, and also here Mihai Eminescu read his poems, and the balls offered by lady Marghiolita were renowned in the whole region. In 1891, Vasile Pogor buys the palace from the Roznovanu family and establishes the headquarters of the City Hall. During 1893-1894, the building undergoes several changes (an additional storey is built and the chapel is demolished) and it becomes for a short time the residence of the royal family (Prince Ferdinand and Princess Maria).

During World War I, during 1916 – 1918, the Roznovanu Palace hosted the headquarters of the ministries and the political leaders refugees from Bucharest. In 1918, the Romanian War Council met in the present Conference Hall of the Local Council. The building was restored after the fire in 1958 which destroyed almost completely the second floor and most of the ornaments on the first floor. The administrative leadership of the city moves to the present headquarters again in 1969.

Today, in the former ball room of the Roznovanu family the meetings of the Local Council are held, as well as the great balls of the City Hall.
