Prague Castle
Prague Castle is the largest medieval castle complex in Europe and the ancient seat of Czech kings throughout the ages. It is Prague's premier tourist attraction and main symbol towering above both the Old and the New Town. It is located at Hradčany - the Castle District. Most of the district consists of noble historical palaces. But there are also many other attractions for visitors: romantic nooks, peaceful places and beautiful lookouts.
Hradčany is interesting mix of styles, architectural directions and historical events. Its eclectic shape is a magnet for the tourists. Placed above the New Town of Prague, its narrow streets and historical atmosphere will amuse every person.
Several buildings are placed in the The Prague Castle complex: Saint Vitus Cathedral (the most reamarkable landmark in the city), towers, historical museums and art galleries, a monastery, the Golden Lane, several palaces, including Lobkowicz Palace, and the Basilica of St. George.
Archeologists say that the first known building in the area was built in the 9th century. In the 12th century, it was replaced by a castle in the romanesque style. In the 14th century, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, under the reign of Charles IV. A further reconstruction of the Royal Palace then took place under the Jagellons at the end of the 15th century.
Prague Castle burned down in 1541 and underwent reconstruction works. The Spanish Hall was added during the reign of Rudolf II. And final alterations were made by Empress Maria Theresa, under the direction of the celebrated architect M. Pacassi. Renovations to the castle buildings and to the Prague Castle Gardens were led by the famous architect J. Plecnik. To this day the castle is preserved in its current form.
Today, Prague Castle is the seat of the President of the Czech Republic and serves as the historical and political centre. Tourists like to watch the ceremony of changing of the guard at the main gate of the castle, carried twice a day.
The access to Prague Castle complex is easy. It is located atbove the Stare Mesto. Getting there by car is difficult and slow. The best way to get to the castle is by tram (at the Královský letohrádek, Pražský hrad, Pohořelec stops) and also with the metro ( at the Malostranská or Hradčanská stations). The visitors use mostly tram No. 22 (stop called Pražský hrad). You can get there via flight to Prague.
