International airports in Lithuania

There are three international airports in Lithuania that can receive international airflights – Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga. Since the EU membership the country’s aircraft is experiencing revival. Lithuania became tourist destination and lots of tourists choose to spend their vacation in the country.

Moreover Lithuania has a strategic geographical position on the map. The country’s airports serve as a transfer spot for the flights to Scandinavia and Russia. The strategic position and the boosting tourism are great opportunity for the national airlines and the transport sector.

Vilnius International Airport
The Vilnius International Airport serves the country’s capital city of Vilnius and is also a main hub for some of the biggest airline carriers in the region – LAL, Air Lithuania, Aurela and Air Baltic. It is loacated 6 km outside of the city. The airport has one terminal. After Lithuania became member of the Schengen community new terminal was scheduled. The airport is operating since 1944.

Kaunas International Airport
Kaunas International Airport is the second biggest airport in Lithuania and the fourth in the Baltic states. It is located at Karmelava, 15 km away from the city of Kaunas. It is working since 1988 and is one of the fastest expanding airports in the region for the past three years. The airport has two terminals and meets the Schengen requirements. It can handle near one million passengers per year. In 2008 Ryanair opened a base at the airport. Currently it is undergoing further expanding.

Palanga International Airport
Palanga International Airport is located near the Baltic Sea in the western part of Lithuania and is serving flights since 1937. In 1997, the airport joined the major international aviation organization ACI (Airports Council International). There is only one main terminal at the airport that underwent several reconstructions. Two additional small terminals are located nearby.
