Dzhur-Dzhur Falls
Dzhur-Dzhur Falls are the most powerful and inimitably scenic waterfalls in Crimea. Located not far from Alushta, they are on the southeastern slopes of Demerdji Mountain. Even in the driest years, Dzhur-Dzhur continues to flow. Breaking into a thousand separate jets, the mass of water rushes down in a powerful current some 15 meters, crashing onto a limestone ledge and spraying visitors with refreshing tiny droplets of water. The name translates from the Crimean Tatar language for 'purl'. It formed East Ulu-Uzen river, that's used for the water supply system of Alushta town.
On the way to the waterfall the silence in Ulu valley is broken by a noise and quiet murmur of water. At the time when the hottest summer days in the Crimea dry practically all small mountain waterfalls the powerful Dzhur-Dzhur continues to fall from the mountain top playing in the sun with every color of the rainbow. The Greeks called this beautiful cascade of falling water Cremasto-Nero which means “hanging water”. The Turks called that never drying waterfall - “murmuring”. Indeed, jets of water falling from the height do not rattle but murmur and flow into the hollow and scatter with tiny splashes.
The beautiful kingdom of water falling down and shining in the sun is continued with a series of picturesque canyon cascades. The cascades form shallow hollows where one can take a bath. Each bath of the waterfall has its own name: “The Bath of Love”, “The Bath of Happiness”, “and The Bath of Wealth”. According to the legend, if you plunge into a certain bath you will gain big happiness, eternal love or endless wealth. “The Bath of Youth” is the most popular with women and “The Bath of Fidelity” is stubbornly avoided by men. In Khapkhal Canyon you breathe fresh air and don’t want to leave.
The waterfall is especially beautiful at midday, when the dappled sunlight refracts in the droplets of water to create a rainbow of translucent colors. The sound of the rushing falls carries a long way in the surrounding woods. The grandness and severity of the surrounding mountains, the foamy streams of the Dzhur-Dzhur dappled in sunbeams and standing out beautifully against the fresh green background of moss-covered rocks will enchant the adventurous traveler.
If you follow the river uphill from Dzhur-Dzhur Falls about a kilometer, you will be able to see an entire series of scenic rapids and cascades where the water runs down as though on a staircase. The most beautiful of these are the uppermost rapids—the last and next-to-last set, at a height of 30 and 60 meters.
