Children information
Do I need to book a separate seat for my infant?
Infants under 2 years of age must travel on an adult's lap during the journey. Note that only 1 infant is allowed to be seated on your lap. Each adult is allowed to travel with two infants provided that one of the kids is positioned on his or her lap during the trip and the other one has a seat of its own booked in advance.
Are there any special meals during the trip?
On intercontinental flights, KLM offers special children's meals for children who are 2 years of age and older.
As far as baby food is concerned, you are advised to bring your own food on board. The aircraft offers only a few baby meals on its intercontinental flights which are free of charge. There is no need to order these in advance.
For more information about special meals, check KLM's Special Meals section here.
Are carrycoats an option?
You can reserve a carrycoat for your baby for intercontinental KLM flights as long as your baby is not heavier than 10 kg and longer than 65 cm on the day of the flight.
Can I bring my own child seat/car on board?
You are allowed to take 1 child seat/car into the cabin for free. The following requirements apply though:
-If you want to use a child seat/car on the flight, you need to make arrangements with the aircraft in advance. Make sure that you call your nearest office for further details and reservations.
-A child seat must be certified and approved for air transport and should have no defect.
-You are allowed to secure a child seat in a rear facing position during landing and take-off.
-When securing a child seat, you should do so following the instructions provided by the seat's manufacturer.
-The child seat must not be bigger than 42 cm (16.5) in width and needs to be able to fit on the aircraft seat.
A Child Aviation Restraint System (CARES) is allowed to be used on the flight if you have booked your child its own seat. The following requirements apply:
-Both the CARES and your child have to be secured on the seat following the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
-You should ensure that the CARES is visibly approved for air transport and that it shows no defects.
-The use of CARES should be reserved in advance.
Can my child travel unaccompanied?
KLM offers Unaccompanied Minor service if your child is traveling on their own. You are required to reserve the service for children between 5 and 14 years of age who are flying unaccompanied. It is not mandatory to reserve the service if your children are aged 15, 16 or 17 but you may do so if you wish.
Please note that all children who are 4 and under are not allowed to travel on their own. They must always be accompanied by a guardian or parent.
Pets
Are pets allowed in the cabin?
On most flights in Economy Class as well as most flights in Business Class within Europe provided by KLM, passengers are allowed to take a small dog or cat into the cabin, and should adhere to the following requirements:
-The cat or dog must be placed either in a hard kennel that is no bigger than 46 x 28 x 20 in size (length, width and height) or in a travel bag that is no bigger than 46 x 28 x 24 in size (length, width and height).
-The total weight of the kennel or travel bag + pet must not be bigger than 8 kg (18 lbs).
-During the trip, your pet must stay in the kennel/travel bag. You must put the kennel under the seat in front of you.
It is recommended that you make a reservation in advance to arrange all the details of your pet shipment. Other pets must travel as check-in baggage.
Pets as checked baggage
Pets are allowed to travel in a ventilated part of the aircraft as checked baggage. The following requirements must be met:
-Your dog or cat must be placed in a kennel which adheres to the IATA rules.
Each year, pets are not allowed into Fokker aircraft's hold between 1 November and 31 March, as the hold cannot be heated. This rule applies to all KLM flights, including those that take less than 2 hours on KLM Cityhopper flights.
-The total weight of the kennel and your pet must not exceed 75 kg (165 lbs).
Every passenger is allowed to fly with up to 3 pets, however, note that the hold can accommodate a limited number of kennels.
Due to stress and high temperatures, snub-nosed animals can experience trouble breathing in the hold. These include Persian cats, Pekinese, bulldogs, boxers, pugs, etc. They may only be shipped as cargo or in the cabin.
Kennel requirements
-Welded wire mesh, metal bar or wooden kennels are not accepted. All kennels must have a rigid plastic or fiberglass shell.
-You must provide a kennel large enough to allow your pet to lie down in a natural position, turn around and move easily and stand up without reaching the top.
-Bolts must be used to join the two parts of the kennel. Other locking methods are not allowed.
-The wheels of the kennel must be removed. They must be blocked with duct tape or taken off if retractable.
